Accountability, Ownership, and Trust
A brief on, well, the above three. And more. Mostly just me rambling about bad follow-ups from a lot of different places.
Accountability, Ownership, and Trust
Accountability
People need to be held accountable. Everyone has a sob story. Doesn't give you the right to be a lazy fuck not doing shit because of it. This is not how we do work. In fact, this is pathetic. You can't afford to lose sight of where you were and what was happening just because you were busy doing god's work. And at the same time, everyone needs to be held accountable to the same extent as everyone else for whatever it was that they were working on. You took up the responsibility. Deliver it.
Ownership
Who owns the creation? The society? The community that has built around the thing? How are things decided? Democracy? Benevolent Dictatorship? Oligarchy? What is the status quo? Why are people who have been involved from the very beginning kicked out the moment they are no longer needed? How does this thing work? This is so upsetting; what happened with people, what happens with people. But sometimes, it's necessary. I have personally moved away from two organisations, one where I was doing damage to the organisation, and the other where the organisation was doing damage to me. So it might be alright. But, to kick the veterans to the curb and not even taking their ideas up for discussion once, is a folly that people shouldn't be out for committing. It's just extremely disrespectful to all their contributions, and, in blunt honesty, just plain stupid.
Trust
How do we trust that others will carry the legacy that we've established and do justice to it? Honestly, we can't. This is something out of controls, now and forever. Even if there's someone you trust with your life, there's no guarantee that 5 passings of leadership down the line, the new folks will have the same level of ethos and dedication and devotion to whatever you've built. And I've seen people change colours in less than a year, so 5 passings is a long shot. It'll probably happen faster. Having said that, it'd be nice if it doesn't. So to anyone out there, don't give up! Have good mechanisms, and more importantly, culture in place to ensure that whatever you're establishing or continuing will continue ever the more.
Sustenance
How does one ensure that things are in place for future survival? Really, there's no clear answer to this. It is as vague as it gets. Most of all, make it a point that the values you aspire for in the organisation are somehow carried over and weathered. That in itself will keep attracting like minded denizens to the community and bring them about to get things working even further, growing up as you do. Keep in mind though, this will work the same way as culture does. It never stagnates. People come, and with them, bring their own individuality, that's eventually sewed in the larger tapestry of the community. It will change. There's nothing you can do about it. Similarly, conditions surrounding you change, and by a whole lot. There is no guarantee that what you may have now is something that'll last a long time, or even a year for that matter.
So, what do we even do?
Nothing, there's nothing you can do about entropy. Really, it's like fighting a losing battle. The way we should instead try to see it is to have fun and enjoy the process. There are moments when the above is important. Many such moments of course. It's hard to see something you worked really hard for crumble to dust and go poof (I know this is an exaggeration, but please get the point). So perhaps, the key to happiness here is to be a bit selfish, enjoy what you get out of all of this, and then just let it go like another chapter of your life, because at the end of the day, you are not meant to impress anyone. It's really just about you and you alone. And not only should that be enough, it should be everything.
