What if, instead of trying to maintain the perfect image in his mind, which he so claimed would be tainted if put in writing, was written down and sent regardless, thus maintaining their connection? A massive change in the plot of '5 centimeters per second', maybe a bit too idealized even. An alternate ending to Shinkai's movie/novel/manga and Shinkai and Kanoh's after-novel. And a happier one.
